What We Do

The Cure Violence Approach

Cure Violence Global’s violence prevention public health methodology applies evidence-based public health epidemic-reversal strategies to:

Trained violence interrupters and outreach workers prevent shootings by identifying and mediating potentially lethal conflicts in the catchment area, and following up to ensure that the conflict does not reignite. Interrupters and other staff work separate from law enforcement and must remain independent in order to maintain the credibility needed to work those at highest risk.

Detect and interrupt potentially violent conflicts

1

Trained outreach workers implement a culturally-appropriate and trauma-informed approach to reduce the risk of those most likely to commit violence and to promote health equity. Outreach workers meet those at highest risk where they are at, talking to them about the costs of using violence, and helping them to obtain the social services they need – such as job training and drug treatment.

Identify and change behaviors of people at highest risk

2

Workers engage leaders in the community as well as community residents, local business owners, faith leaders, service providers, and the high risk, conveying the message that the residents, groups, and the community do not support the use of violence.

Mobilize the community to change norms

Cure Violence ICT is one of  Destination Innovation’s newest programs called:
Project We Deserve.

We deserve healthy communities, we deserve the space to grow up, food sustainability, adequate healthcare systems that protect and not neglect us, and an end to gun violence.

This is made possible through a partnership between the City of Wichita, and Wichita State University. Through the implementation of the CVG Model, the Cure Violence ICT team, using violence interrupters and outreach workers, takes a public health approach to ending gun violence. Leveraging their relationships within the community, they detect, interrupt and mediate conflicts, to prevent retaliations and reduce recidivism.

Recognizing the importance of the community, the model uses the community organizing framework to mobilize and empower the community to solve its own problems. We aim to reduce the risk of violence for our participants and build stronger communities in our target areas in District 1 and District 3, with the support of our community partners.
